New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told The Guardian in an interview that he holds the media responsible for America’s current problems, and he indicated that those outlets he deems problematic should face consequences.

“I don’t want to give [the media] a free pass on what they have done to all of us,” he said.

De Blasio rejected that his attacks on the press are similar to President Trump’s attacks, saying the two had “no comparison.” His criticisms are a “critique,” while Trump is attempting to destroy democracy:

“There is no comparison between a progressive critique of the media – and overwhelmingly corporate media, by the way – and a president who does not believe in free speech and is trying to undermine the norms of democracy,” he said.

The mayor went further, imagining a world without the news outlets he despises. “If you could remove News Corp from the last 25 years of American history, we would be in an entirely different place,” he told The Guardian’s Ben Jacobs.

Will CNN now devote endless segments to de Blasio’s autocratic, anti-media tendencies? It’s unlikely, given the response of CNN’s media reporter Brian Stelter:
