New York City’s Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio wouldn’t say whether he was willing to go to prison to defend New York City’s sanctuary city status during a press conference on Wednesday.

De Blasio was holding the press conference to respond to a letter the Department of Justice sent to 23 sanctuary cities, including New York, which demanded they provide records showing they are cooperating with immigration enforcement agencies.

A reporter asked de Blasio whether he would be willing to get arrested to defend New York’s sanctuary city status.

“I think if they attempt to take away our funding, we will go to court immediately,” de Blasio responded. “[If] they attempt to take away our funding for the NYPD, we will go to court, and we will prove their actions are unconstitutional.”

De Blasio never said whether he would be willing to go to jail to defend the city’s sanctuary city status. Other mayors have made such a pledge.
