Billionaire Environmentalist Tom Steyer May Run for President

Billionaire environmentalist and megadonor Tom Steyer may announce he’s running for president on Tuesday, according to The Atlantic’s Edward-Isaac Dovere.

If Steyer chooses to run, it would be a reversal from January, when he announced in Iowa that he would not seek the Democratic Party’s nomination.

According to Dovere, Steyer told staffers of two of his groups, Need to Impeach and NextGen America, that he planned to launch a 2020 run and would make a formal announcement on Tuesday.

Despite being a megadonor to Democratic candidates, Steyer has frequently shied away from becoming a candidate himself. It was widely speculated he would run for Senate in California in 2016 and governor in 2018, but he backed away from both opportunities. His January announcement in Iowa was expected to be a presidential campaign launch event, but it turned out to be a town hall for Need to Impeach.

The 2020 race has remained alluring, though, especially with accepting that there won’t be an open Democratic race for California governor until 2026, and that he’s unlikely to be the top pick for a California senate seat. At 62 years old, Steyer knows the time for him to run is now or never, people who’ve spoken to him tell me.

While the timing might make sense in terms of Steyer’s age and the available seats in his home state of California, that math is not new. So, what changed Steyer’s mind in the past six or so months?

Perhaps best known as an environmentalist, Steyer has been frustrated with Gov. Jay Inslee’s (D-WA) campaign and its inability to gain momentum. Inslee pledged to make climate change his top issue on the campaign trail, but he’s failed to crack 1 percent in national polls.

Steyer has also expressed frustration with House Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, for not advancing impeachment more forcefully in the House of Representatives.

If Steyer indeed launches a presidential bid on Tuesday and this isn’t another elaborate “boy who cried wolf” scenario, expect an aggressive, well-funded campaign that focuses on needing to remove Trump from office and extreme environmental causes.
