The Democratic senator predicted that Trump would make himself monarch with Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said at a rally in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday that President Trump would become king of the United States if the Senate confirmed Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
Blumenthal, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, cited Kavanaugh’s arguments that the Department of Justice cannot subpoena the president.
“The president would be a monarch if Brett Kavanaugh becomes a Supreme Court justice,” the senator claimed. “I don’t think Americans want an imperial presidency.”
Blumenthal added that only “checks-and-balances” would stop Trump from reforming the United States into a monarchy. He did not clarify, however, whether he believed Trump would institute a monarchy or an empire, despite bringing up both forms of government.
