National Security Adviser John Bolton, in an appearance on CBS on Sunday, said that he warned high-ranking Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, against interfering in the 2018 U.S. elections.

But Putin’s response to Bolton was interesting. Instead of continuing his absolute denials, the Russian president may have indirectly acknowledged that Russians meddled in the 2016 presidential election.

“What he said was, there was no meddling in 2016 by the Russian state,” Bolton said of Putin. “That’s very different than saying, from my view, that there’s no Russian meddling at all.”

Putin’s statement left the door open to the possibility of interference from non-state Russian entities, Bolton surmised.

The national security adviser predicted that President Trump will want to press the issue with Putin at an upcoming meeting.
