Asked about the Trump administration’s policy toward European companies doing business with Iran, National Security Adviser John Bolton told CNN that it’s “possible” the United States will punish those entities.

“I think the issue here is what the Europeans are going to do,” Bolton said. “I think the Europeans will see it’s in their interest ultimately to come along with us.”

CNN’s Jake Tapper told Bolton that European diplomats have made clear they intend to stay in the deal.

The national security adviser responded that President Trump had discussed his regional goals with European leaders, hoping to jointly contain Iran’s ambitions.

“Is the U.S. going to impose sanctions on European companies that continue to do business with Iran?” Tapper asked.

“It’s possible,” Bolton said. “It depends on the conduct of other governments.”
