Booker Staff is Already Taking Shots at Beto on Twitter

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), who has built his campaign message on the subject of “love,” has hired staffers who aren’t afraid to throw jabs on social media.

The political world is reacting to former Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s (D-TX) decision to jump into the presidential primary Thursday. Sen. Kamala Harris’s (D-CA) team put out a fundraising email with the subject line, “Beto O’Rourke,” while President Trump commented on the Texan’s gesticulating hand movements.

But a newly announced staffer for Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) joined the fracas Thursday morning with a subtweet designed to undercut O’Rourke’s image and message. The Booker campaign announced on Monday that it had hired Julie McClain Downey, a former EMILY’s List and Hillary Clinton staffer, to be his director of state communications. Her message on Twitter was simple: if you like O’Rourke’s profile and record, there’s a candidate just for you who’s already in the race:

Booker’s candidacy is a unique one because, in a day and age in which our political discourse is increasingly toxic, he purports to want a message focused on “love.” Here’s how CNN described Booker’s message and philosophy:

Sen. Cory Booker has promised to run a relentlessly positive and unifying campaign, preaching love as an antidote to the nation’s ills during his first trip to Iowa as a presidential candidate this weekend.

While the campaign could do a lot worse than subtweeting O’Rourke’s announcement, the not-so-subtle attack does raise questions about how the New Jersey Democrat plans to navigate what will surely become a very contentious primary in the coming months.
