Sheriff Mark Dannels, the chief law enforcement officer in border county Cochise County, Arizona, told a gathering at the White House on Monday that he is “100 percent opposed” to open borders.

The sheriff lauded the work of President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen to secure the southern border.

“I can look back after 34 years and say [the government has] not been [united on border security] in the past,” he told the White House crowd. “To have that support from President Trump [is an honor.]”

“We talk about open borders – I’m 100 percent opposed to that,” the sheriff added.

To support his position, Dannell cited the instances of gangs and violent criminals crossing the U.S.-Mexico border into his county. He described the murder of one National Park Service employee by the hands of a person crossing the border illegally. Border Patrol, the sheriff said, successfully brought the man to justice when he crossed into Mexico and attempted to come back to the United States.
