Borger: Heidi Heitkamp Came Out Against Brett Kavanaugh Because Of Her Poor Poll Numbers

"I think Heidi Heitkamp came out today because she saw the poll numbers and saw the writing on the wall."

CNN’s chief political analyst Gloria Borger said that Sen. Heidi Heitkamp’s (D-ND) poor poll numbers are the reason why she announced that she would vote against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Thursday.

Heitkamp, who is considered one of the most vulnerable Senate Democrats up for reelection in 2018, announced on Thursday that she would vote no on Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Borger said that she thought Heitkamp’s announcement was “very significant,” but added that it wasn’t a surprise.

“Heidi Heitkamp’s most recent poll numbers have been terrible. She’s about a dozen points behind her competitor. It was a much closer race before this whole Kavanaugh controversy erupted,” Borger said. “I think Heidi Heitkamp came out today because she saw the poll numbers and saw the writing on the wall and did not want to fall on her sword on this nomination.”

A poll released on Tuesday showed Heitkamp trailing her Republican challenger. Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-ND), by 10 points, and another poll released on Wednesday showed Heitkamp trailing by 12 points.
