BREAKING: Speaker Ryan to Retire at End of Year

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) is making 2018 his final year as a member of the U.S. House, according to a statement released by his spokesman.

Axios‘ Jonathan Swan and Mike Allen had the scoop around one hour prior to Buck’s statement.

Speaker Paul Ryan told House Republicans this morning that he will not run for re-election in November.

Congressional leadership may have received a heads up from Ryan, as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), often a political foe, was out immediately with a statement praising Ryan as “a good man who is always true to his word.”

So did President Trump, who tweeted that Ryan “is a truly good man.”

As of Ryan’s retirement announcement, the top two candidates to replace him as House GOP leader are Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA). Both are allies of President Trump.

McCarthy made a move for speaker once before when John Boehner retired abruptly in 2015, but the end to his ascension effort led to Ryan becoming a consensus pick among House Republicans.
