Phil Bredesen, a former governor and Democrat running for Sen. Bob Corker’s (R-TN) opening seat, has close ties to disgraced Nashville Mayor Megan Barry, endorsing her in the race for city leadership in 2015. The Senate candidate called Barry “the right person to be the next mayor” of Nashville, but it’s becoming clear that Bredesen’s judgment was inadequate.

Mayor Barry plead guilty to felony theft on Tuesday, amid a massive scandal that exposed a sexual affair with her bodyguard, Sgt. Rob Forrest. The Tennessean reports:

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony theft of property over $10,000 related to her affair with former police bodyguard Sgt. Rob Forrest.

Taking the unusual step of appearing himself in court, instead of assigning a deputy, District Attorney Glenn Funk said that “had this case gone to trial, witnesses are available who would testify that in March 2016 and January 2018 Megan Barry caused over 10K but less than 60K in Metro Nashville city funds to be expended unlawfully on Mr. Robert Forrest.”

Bredesen has been closely aligned with Barry. After not endorsing in the previous two Nashville mayoral races, the ex-governor jumped into the 2015 race to back Barry.

Described as a “Barry ally,” the senate candidate offered effusive praise when she ran for election. Per The Tennessean, Bredesen said that Barry “has the character traits I really think are important in the leadership of the city”:

“I have watched Megan Barry in the council, and openness and coalition building is what she does, and she does it very well, and it is what we need to keep doing here in Nashville,” Bredesen said.

“I think Megan Barry is the right person to be the next mayor.”

Barry was caught in February engaging in an affair with her police bodyguard, frequently visiting a historic Nashville cemetery with Forrest to allegedly engage in trysts.

UPDATE: Bredesen released this statement.
