Bryant Gumbel: NFL Ratings Down Because the Product Isn’t Very Good

"I think that the one that's being overlooked is the NFL product is not a very good entertainment product anymore. It's become a very uptight corporate league."

HBO’s Bryant Gumbel said that the NFL’s ratings have declined this season because the product the NFL is putting on the field isn’t very entertaining. Gumbel made the comments during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

NBC’s Chuck Todd asked Gumbel whether President Trump’s attack on the NFL over players kneeling during the national anthem was, in Gumbel’s opinion, the reason why ratings were down this season.

In, September, Trump suggested that NFL owners fire any player who knelt during the national anthem. His comments resulted in players across the NFL kneeling during the national anthem.

Gumbel told Todd that he thought that protest surrounding the national anthem did play a factor in the NFL’s rating decline this season, but that there was a more significant reason for the rating dip.

“I think that the one that’s being overlooked is the NFL product is not a very good entertainment product anymore. It’s become a very uptight corporate league, and a dink-and-dunk league and people aren’t as drawn to it as they used to be,” Gumbel explained.
