Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) suffered a major setback in her campaign for a fifth term in the Senate Saturday, when her own state party backed her left-wing challenger, State Sen. Kevin De León.

According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, California Democratic leaders “took a step to the left” with the endorsement.

Feinstein had campaigned for a “no endorsement” decision from the party, the TimesPhil Willon reported, but California Democrats had different ideas.

It wasn’t even close:

De León, a former state Senate leader from Los Angeles, received 65% of the vote of about 330 members of the state party’s executive board — more than the 60% needed to secure the endorsement. Feinstein, who pleaded with party leaders meeting in Oakland this weekend not to endorse any candidate, received 7%, and 28% voted for “no endorsement.”

The California Democratic Party refused to endorse Feinstein in the primary, as well. Feinstein has long had a contentious relationship with with the state party, according to a February report from Politico.

The Democratic senator has faced fire from her left over her expressed willingness to work with Republicans.

If California is a test case, Democratic incumbents who don’t resist Trump may find themselves as outcasts on the left.
