California Democrats offered a sharp rebuke of Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) at this year’s state convention in San Diego. Feinstein, who is seeking a fifth full term, is facing off against state Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon (D-CA).

Recent polls have shown Feinstein blowing out de Leon, 46-17, according to one poll released earlier this month. But those attending California Democrats’ convention tend to be far more liberal than the voting public. That group picked de Leon over Feinstein, 54-37.

Because neither candidate reached the 60-vote threshold, neither earned the official endorsement of the party.

On top of de Leon’s poor showing in the polls and his lack of statewide recognition among voters, he’s also facing a massive cash disadvantage:

Her financial advantage is even more overwhelming: Feinstein held close to $10 million in cash on hand at the end of last year, while de León reported raising just $500,000.

Though the California Democrats’ non-endorsement of Feinstein is news, it’s not surprising. Politico reports that Feinstein “has long maintained an uneasy relationship with activists who dominate state party conventions.”

The question will be whether de Leon can turn success among far-left liberals into votes. California’s primary will be held June 5.
