California Just Dropped Plans for High-Speed Rail, a Cornerstone of the Green New Deal

Arguably one of the most liberal states in the country just threw a curveball to proponents of the Green New Deal.

California Just Dropped Plans for High-Speed Rail, a Cornerstone of the Green New Deal

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) announced Tuesday afternoon that California is scrapping a plan to build a high-speed rail system connecting its major metropolitan hubs Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The governor cited high costs as the reason the route could not happen, but offered a Bakersfield (north of Los Angeles) to Merced (south and east of San Francisco) line as a potential consolation.

“Let’s level about the high-speed rail,” Newsom said. “Let’s be real, the current project as planned would cost too much and, respectfully, take too long. Right now, there simply isn’t a path to get from Sacramento to San Diego, let alone from San Francisco to L.A. I wish there were.”

According to estimates by the previous governor’s administration, the LA to SF line would have cost $77 billion. An estimate for completion targeted the year 2033.

This is likely coming as terrible news for proponents of the Green New Deal, which calls on Americans to rely more heavily on high-speed rail rather than air travel.

Specifically, the section of the FAQ on transportation calls to “build out high-speed rail at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary.” The resolution itself doesn’t mention air travel at all but does call for the goal of “investing in … clean, affordable, and accessible transportation; and high-speed rail” as part of a 10-year national mobilization.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), one of the lead sponsors of the Green New Deal, claimed that the FAQ, which contained the mention of eliminating air travel in favor of high-speed rail, was posted inadvertently.

Still, the fact that California is scrapping a very well-traveled and relatively short-distanced route for cost considerations is bad news for proponents of a nationwide high-speed rail system designed to replace air travel.
