California Lt. Gov Calls Action on Sanctuary Cities ‘Racist Political Stunts’

In response to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ threat to subpoena the records of sanctuary cities, amidst their flaunting of federal immigration law, California’s Democratic lieutenant governor, Gavin Newsom, told Sessions to “bring it.”

“Your racist political stunts are getting old and will not work on us,” Newsom tweeted, citing an article on the attorney general’s pledge.

California, arguably the center of the anti-Trump resistance, declared itself a “sanctuary state” and urged its residents to refuse compliance with federal immigration authorities.

Just recently, Attorney General Xavier Becerra (D-CA) threatened to prosecute employers who cooperated with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The state also passed a law prohibiting state or local officers from working with federal immigration authorities to hold certain criminal aliens.

According to Fox News, around 2.3 million illegal immigrants live in California, giving it one of the highest populations of illegal immigrants in the country.

The Trump administration has zeroed in on sanctuary municipalities as a hazard to local communities and immigration enforcement. Sessions’ recent action is only the latest in a larger strategy to combat illegal immigration. If Newsom wants to dismiss the subpoenas as a “racist political stunt,” he may miss the fact that President Trump is coming for sanctuary cities.
