Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), who recently announced she’s running for president, got some middle-of-the-road marks from her constituents, according to a Quinnipiac poll conducted in California.

While 53 percent of California voters said they approve of the job she is doing, and 58 percent said they are excited about her candidacy, those same voters are not so sure whether the Bay Area Democrat would actually make a good president.

According to the survey, 40 percent said they believed she would be a good commander in chief, while 38 percent said she would not. The San Francisco Chronicle breaks down the numbers further:

Women (48 to 31 percent), those ages 18 to 34 (44 to 28 percent) and Bay Area voters (59 to 29 percent) said Harris would be a good president. But men (45 to 32 percent), those over 65 years old (42 to 37 percent) and Southern California residents (44 to 32 percent) didn’t think so.

When broken down by political party, 68 percent of Democrats said they thought she would make a good president, but 75 percent of Republicans and 42 percent of independents said the opposite.

“Is she a candidate for the whole state? We don’t see that yet,” Quinnipiac’s Tim Malloy said.

Also troubling for Harris is the fact that 60 percent of Californians said they were excited about former Vice President Joe Biden running for president. Biden has not yet announced his 2020 plans.
