‘Can You Stop Interrupting?’ ‘Can You Stop Lying?’: The Nixon-Cuomo Debate

Gov. Andrew Cuomo shared a debate stage Wednesday with former “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon on Wednesday. Nixon is challenging Cuomo in the Democratic primary for New York governor, and the two clearly can’t stand one another.

Nixon ripped Cuomo as a “corrupt corporate Democrat,” and Cuomo countered by calling Nixon herself a corporation. “You are a corporation,” he said, a reference to Nixon’s tax strategy of using an S-corporation for her income. “I am a person.”

The debate devolved from there, as the two argued over which one of them was the bigger liar:

For much of the hour, they jabbed and counterpunched, talking over each other repeatedly and accusing each other of distortions, as Mr. Cuomo said Ms. Nixon lives in “the world of fiction.”

“Can you stop interrupting?” Mr. Cuomo said to her at one point.

“Can you stop lying?” Ms. Nixon snapped back.

Mr. Cuomo paused. “As soon as you do,” he answered.

Nixon mocked Cuomo’s bumbling attack against President Trump in which he claimed that “America was never that great.”

“No one has stood up to Donald Trump the way I have,” Mr. Cuomo said.

Ms. Nixon dismissed that idea entirely, quipping, “You stood up to him about as well as he stood up to Putin.”

Cuomo was forced to correct his remark about America after his speech.

The New York gubernatorial primary is September 13, and most polls show Cuomo with a healthy lead in the race.
