The chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Black Caucus, Virgie M. Rollins, was caught on tape by the Republican National Committee (RNC) bragging about being a former Black Panther, during an event in Detroit, Michigan with DNC Vice Chair Keith Ellison on Saturday.

“I’m a former Black Panther,” Rollins can be heard saying. “When we talk about the movement, as a former Black Panther with Angela Davis and Kathleen Cleaver, it was important for us to make people understand that it was about the movement for us.”

According to Britannica’s page on the Black Panther Party:

The party’s original purpose was to patrol African American neighbourhoods to protect residents from acts of police brutality. The Panthers eventually developed into a Marxist revolutionary group that called for the arming of all African Americans, the exemption of African Americans from the draft and from all sanctions of so-called white America, the release of all African Americans from jail, and the payment of compensation to African Americans for centuries of exploitation by white Americans.

Angela Davis was arrested for purchasing the firearms that were used in the 1970 armed takeover of a Marin County, California courtroom, which resulted in four people dying. Davis was eventually acquitted.

Kathleen Cleaver’s husband Eldridge Cleaver led an ambush of Oakland police officer in the 1960s, and was forced to live in exile for several years.
