CHAOS: Supreme Court Decision Has Democrats at Each Other’s Throats

CHAOS: Supreme Court Decision Has Democrats at Each Other’s Throats

Senate Democrats are lashing out at one another over President Trump’s latest Supreme Court nominee. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) needs every member of his caucus to oppose Trump’s nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, plus at least one Republican, in order to block his nomination.

But convincing his members to fall in line is turning out to be more difficult than he anticipated.

Trump’s previous Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, won the support of three Senate Democrats last year – Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), and Joe Donnelly (D-IN). Political observers are expecting these three and perhaps a couple others to be the Democrats most likely to break party lines to back Trump’s nominee. Trump won each of their states in 2016 by 20 percentage points or more.

A few of those Democrats are beginning to speak out against Democrat leadership. Here’s Manchin’s response to questions about his vote:

“I’ll be 71 years old in August, you’re going to whip me? Kiss my you know what,” said Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) when asked if Schumer can influence his vote.

Donnelly’s and Heitkamp’s responses were a little less colorful, but similar in spirit:

“My decision won’t have anything to do with Chuck Schumer,” Donnelly said.

“I’m going to vote the way I’m going to vote regardless of what the leader says,’ Heitkamp said.

It will be months until these senators are asked to actually cast a vote for or against Kavanaugh, but in the meantime, Schumer clearly has his hands full.
