China Forces Mercedes-Benz to Apologize for Quoting Dalai Lama

Chinese intimidation of western companies continued with a new victim this week, Mercedez-Benz. The communist government forced the car manufacturer to apologize after the company used a quote from the Dalai Lama on its Instagram account.

Per The Wall Street Journal, Mercedes pledged to honor China’s territorial integrity:

Mercedes-Benz, the luxury unit of Daimler AG , recently learned the price of crossing Beijing. Earlier this month the German car maker was attacked by state media after posting an anodyne Dalai Lama quote on Instagram. The company quickly and abjectly apologized to the Chinese government. It then went further, promising “no support, assistance, aid or help to anyone who intentionally subverts or attempts to subvert China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Mercedes is the second company to bow to China’s demands, after Marriott International apologized for a similar infraction:

The communist Chinese government blocked Marriott International’s local website inside the country this week, and the hotel chain apologized for its violations of Beijing’s sensitive censorship laws.

Marriott’s crime? It allegedly undermined the “sovereignty and territorial integrity” of the communist government with a “like” on Twitter and a customer survey.

As companies try to gain access to China’s markets, the government’s communist tentacles are spreading across the world through censorship. Tech companies like Apple have moved data to storage in China, where the government can monitor its citizens.
