Chinese President Xi Jinping met a second time this year with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, according to news reports out Tuesday morning, as Xi attempts to have an influence over a highly-anticipated summit between Kim and President Trump scheduled to happen in weeks.

The South China Morning Post wrote that Xi and Kim met in the northeast Chinese city of Dalian.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in the northeastern Chinese port city of Dalian on Monday and Tuesday.

…A third source said a plane carrying high-ranking North Korean officials had landed in the city. State-run CCTV confirmed on Tuesday that Xi had held talks with Kim.

Dalian, China is closer to Pyongyang, North Korea than any other major Chinese city. Only a portion of the East China sea separates the two cities.

CGTN, an English-language network owned by state-run media outlets, tweeted video of the Xi-Kim summit on Tuesday morning.

It’s clear Xi will make take his conversations with Kim to President Trump, as the U.S. president tweeted Tuesday morning that he would be talking to Xi about North Korea.

What Xi and China can get out of U.S.-North Korea negotiations remains to be seen, but it’s clear the powerful Chinese leader wants a say in whatever happens in the coming weeks.
