Chris Matthews: I’m Rooting Against the Democratic Party, They Are Too Elite

"There's too many elitists. There is so much elitism in the Democrat party, it's outrageous," Matthews said.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews said on Tuesday that he is rooting against the Democratic Party, because the level of elitism inside the party is “outrageous.”

“Morning Joe” was discussing the legacy of Robert F. Kennedy when MSNBC’s Willie Geist asked Matthews if he thought there is anything modern-day Democrats can learn from Kennedy.

Matthews told Geist that there are a lot of “phony liberals” inside the Democratic Party today.

“A true democrat, lower case ‘d,’ thinks they’re no better than anybody else. That’s what a Democrat is,” Matthews said. “And the party regains that when white, black, Hispanic people, everybody, starts to think of themselves as one of them instead of being better than them. They’ll get back to the party of the people, and they’re not there yet.”

“There’s too many elitists. There is so much elitism in the Democrat party, it’s outrageous,” Matthews said. “And I’m telling you, the people feel it. There’s a party going on and they ain’t invited to it.”

Matthews then blasted Democrats for having too many galas, and not connecting with average Americans.

“I’m rooting against them even though I may agree with their policies,” Matthews said. “I think there’s a party attitude of elitism and I think they got to get over it. And it’s too much talk into fundraisers, because the people they talk to on these kind of shows are really the people they want their money from, and they’re the elite.”
