Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), a frequent critic of President Trump, proposed a strategy for U.S. engagement in the Syrian civil war that shared similar characteristics to the priorities the Trump administration had advanced.

Murphy named the number one priority in the Middle East as defeating ISIS.

“Keep your focus on ISIS. ISIS is the enemy here,” Murphy said. “ISIS is the number one priority.”

Both U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have stated that the main goal of U.S. involvement in Syria was the defeat of the Islamic State.

On the issue of Assad staying in power, Murphy’s position had a lot in common with Tillerson’s statements than Haley’s comments.

“I would certainly prefer to have a future Syria without Assd,” Murphy said.

“I don’t know whether that is possible,” Murphy said, though. “Right now the focus has to be on stopping this carnage inside Syria.”

Tillerson told ABC News Sunday that after the defeat of ISIS, “we hope to turn our attention to cease-fire agreements between the regime and opposition forces.”

He added that “the Syrian people will be able to lawfully to decide the fate of Bashar al-Assad.”

On the other hand, Haley differed from Murphy and Tillerson, saying, “We know that there’s not any sort of option where a political solution’s going to happen with Assad at the head of the regime.”
