Dan McCready, a Democrat running for Congress in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District, wants you to know he’s a “clean energy” kind of guy. On his campaign website, he touts a small business he started that “supports over 30,000 clean energy jobs.”

He told Bloomberg in May that he “talks about clean energy every day on the campaign trail,” and talks up his efforts to move North Carolina up in the rankings when it comes to solar energy.

The League of Conservation Voters, a liberal special-interest group, endorsed McCready back in March, touting him as “a leader on solar energy in North Carolina.”

So it might surprise North Carolina voters to know that McCready’s family profited from selling assets it had in oil and gas companies. According to the candidate’s financial disclosure statement, McCready’s wife sold between $50,005 and $165,000 in oil and gas assets from the Laura T McCready revocable trust.

More troubling still is the fact that the McCreadys made this financial move four months after Dan announced his candidacy last year.

In a year like the 2018 midterms, authenticity matters more than ever. So selling yourself to voters as a “clean energy” candidate while simultaneously profiting from holdings in oil and gas companies seems like a fairly insurmountable challenge.

McCready faces Republican Mark Harris in the general election on November 6. They are competing for the seat being vacated by Rep. Robert Pittenger, who lost to Harris in the May primary.
