On Thursday, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) – Hillary Clinton’s successor to one of New York’s U.S. Senate seats, and a possible 2020 presidential candidate – told The New York Times that Bill Clinton should have resigned from the presidency after the Monica Lewinsky allegations against him went public.

Asked directly if she believed Mr. Clinton should have stepped down at the time, Ms. Gillibrand took a long pause and said, “Yes, I think that is the appropriate response.”

…“Things have changed today, and I think under those circumstances there should be a very different reaction,” Ms. Gillibrand said. “And I think in light of this conversation, we should have a very different conversation about President Trump, and a very different conversation about allegations against him.”

This may just open up more old wounds in the Democratic Party, though. The evidence? The reaction from Clinton aide Philippe Reines.

In one tweet, Reines called Gillibrand a “[h]ypocrite” for taking the “Clintons’ endorsements, money, and seat,” even after former independent counsel Ken Starr “spent $70 million on a consensual blowjob.”

Reines’ tweet inspired scores of responses from Twitter users. Reines responded to several of them.

In one, he accused Gillibrand of having no courage, and in another, of having no spine.

Not to be outdone, Reines suggested Gillibrand was “handed” the U.S. Senate seat.

It seems like that reckoning on ex-President Bill Clinton’s sexual misdeeds will be more difficult for Democrats than some thought.
