In an appearance on the network on Thursday, CNN political analyst Molly Ball blamed former Vice President Joe Biden for starting the exchange of physical threats between Biden and President Trump.

“The president likes to have a target, likes to have an enemy, and likes to play the victim,” she told CNN’s John Berman.

“To be clear, Joe Biden did start this. It was Joe Biden who issued the first childish taunt,” Ball said.

The CNN political analyst and Time journalist was referencing Biden’s comments during the 2016 election, when he said that he’d “like to take [Trump] behind the gym if I were in high school,” implying he would beat up the then-candidate.

The former vice president reignited the controversy in a more explicit manner on Tuesday, saying he’d “beat the hell out of” Trump. “Any guy that talked [like Trump] was usually the fattest, ugliest S.O.B. in the room,” he said.

Trump responded this morning:

Ball said that Trump’s response was perfectly in line with his brand.

“[Trump’s] a counterpuncher. People attack him, what’s he supposed to do? Just sit there and take it?” she asked.
