CNN Blasts Trump Video as ‘Racist New Ad’

CNN is harshly criticizing President Donald Trump for a video he tweeted five days before the November midterms.

In what it describes as “the most racially charged national political ad in 30 years,” the video depicts a group of people attempting to break down gates and clips of convicted murderers. CNN called it “the latest example of the President’s willingness to lie and fear-monger in order to tear at racial and societal divides.”

The web video — produced for the Trump campaign — features Luis Bracamontes, a Mexican man who had previously been deported but returned to the United States and was convicted in February in the slaying of two California deputies.

“I’m going to kill more cops soon,” a grinning Bracamontes is shown saying in court as captions flash across the screen reading “Democrats let him into our country. Democrats let him stay.”

CNN blasts the ad as “just as shocking” as the Willie Horton ad that aired in 1988 and featured the convicted murderer, who committed rape while furloughed from a Massachusetts correctional institution. The ad was designed to criticize Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis, who was governor of Massachusetts at the time.

But not everyone in the media was hyping the video in the way CNN was. Huffington Post reporter Kevin Robillard noted that the video is actually not an ad at all, and would only gain attention if the media allowed it:

Still, it is shocking to see the president share a video with such violence and vulgar language just days before Election Day. Time will tell if the rest of the media and Democrats will take the bait.

Earlier this week, Fox News’ Shepard Smith attempted to allay the fears of those concerned about the so-called “caravan” of migrants making their way to the southern U.S. border and Trump’s decision to send 5,200 troops there weeks before their expected arrival.
