Professor Marc Lamont Hill, an author who regularly appears on CNN to discuss race issues, took to Twitter on Monday to wish a happy 71st birthday to convicted cop killer, Assata Shakur.

In one tweet, Hill said that Shakur “changed (and saved) my life.” Then in another, he quoted Shakur, whose real name is Joanne Chesimard, on the importance of “fight[ing] for our freedom.”

Here are the tweets:

A jury convicted Shakur with the “execution-style” killing of a New Jersey State Trooper in 1977. She escaped prison while serving a life sentence in 1979, and authorities believe she fled to Cuba.

Shakur is on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists list, and the agency has a $1 million bounty on her head.

Hill has tweeted about her repeatedly, saying she is “innocent” and wishing her a happy birthday multiple times.
