CNN: GOP Gaining on Democrats in 2018 Polling

The Democratic lead on the 2018 generic ballot is getting smaller and smaller, and the GOP surge is driven by independents.

A new poll from CNN shows Republicans gaining ground on their Democratic opponents on the 2018 generic ballot.

Asked by pollsters if they would generically vote Republican or Democrat in 2018, 49 percent of respondents picked Democrats, and 44 percent chose Republicans.

CNN’s John King pointed out that the new poll shows momentum for Republicans. “That’s a closer margin than in our last poll. It’s a closer margin than in many other polls,” he said.

However, the poll showed a large enthusiasm gap between GOP and Democratic voters, signaling a turnout advantage for Trump opponents.

Another Marist poll last week showed Republicans leading Democrats among independents.
