CNN reported that a school shooting at a Maryland high school was brought to a quick end on Tuesday when a school resource officer quickly “engaged” the shooter.

CNN’s Brian Todd told viewers that three students were wounded in the shooting at Great Mills High School in Maryland, but further carnage was avoided when the heroic law enforcement officer jumped into action.

“The shooter entered the school early this morning, confronted another student – a female – shot her, shot another student, and then a school resource officer engaged the shooter and ended the threat,” Todd said.

The wounded count Todd provided indicates that the shooter was also a student and one of the wounded.

St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s office told CNN that the situation was ended “very quickly” because of the school resource officer’s actions.

According to the sheriff’s website, school resource officers in the county “work with the school faculty to maintain a safe learning environment.” The sheriff’s office has a deputy at each of the county’s high schools:

The School Resource program was implemented in St. Mary’s County during the 1998-1999 school year. The Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the St. Mary’s County Board of Education entered into a memorandum of understanding which assigned a Sheriff’s Deputy to each of the three county public high schools. The program was expanded during the 2005-2006 school year adding two additional deputies who split their time between the four public middle schools.
