CNN Panel Slams WH Correspondent’s Dinner

"The president won last night," CNN correspondent Jeff Zeleny told his colleagues.

A panel on CNN’s “Inside Politics” on Sunday morning criticized the tone of the 2018 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, saying it exemplified the worst of the culture of Washington.

CNN’s Jeff Zeleny criticized the routine of comedian Michelle Wolf, saying it got too personal. “I thought the jokes were one-sided, not necessarily funny,” he said.

“This dinner has had a lot of bad moments,” the CNN reporter added. Zeleny slammed Wolf for attacking the appearance of White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

“I think the president wins. He goes out to Washington, a township of Michigan, far away from this,” he said. “We sometimes celebrate ourselves too much I think.”

The Washington Post’s Karoun Demirjian said that bringing Wolf to the dinner, the media essentially endorsed her words. “She is effectively speaking for the press,” the reporter added.

Demirjian speculated that media-skeptic Americans might have confirmed their ideas about Washington seeing the event last night.

CNN’s John King read a tweet from President Trump about the dinner, calling it “smart politics.”

King, for his part, told his colleagues that he no longer attends the annual dinner. “I stopped going to prom a long time ago,” he said. “I think it jumped the shark a long time ago.”
