CO Political Analyst: Hick ‘Low on Most Lists’ for 2020

One Colorado pollster and political analyst suggested this month that John Hickenlooper would not begin his 2020 presidential campaign a frontrunner.

He has a high net approval, and he’s not currently engulfed in any kind of scandal. Why, then, is Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO) “low on most lists” for president in 2020?

Colorado pollster and political analyst Floyd Ciruli explained in a blog post last week:

Although the presidential field is wide open, it is crowded with both D.C. liberal icons, like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, newcomers, like Kamala Harris, and, of course, the establishment-types, like Joe Biden. Hickenlooper is low on most lists. Finding supporters, wealthy funders and interest groups interested in his pragmatic message and quirky demeanor will be a formidable task. As of today, the odds look long, but it’s early and things can change quickly. Think of 2016.

Hickenlooper may be well-known in Colorado, but outside of the state his name recognition is far lower. He also may be risking his presidential prospects by presenting himself as a moderate, while the liberal presidential primary base is embracing ideas like Medicare-for-All and “abolish[ing] ICE.”

Will Hickenlooper fall short to more liberal candidates and candidates with higher name recognition? Time will tell, if Hickenlooper even runs.
