President Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, told “Good Morning America” on Friday that Trump directed him to make hush-money payments to various women during the 2016 presidential campaign.

This was Cohen’s first interview since being sentenced to three years in prison for campaign finance violations, tax evasion, and for lying to Congress.

ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos asked Cohen whether Trump’s prior claim, that he never directed Cohen to make these ‘hush-money’ payments, is accurate.

“I don’t think there’s anybody that believes that,” Cohen said. “First of all, nothing at the Trump organization was ever done unless it was run through Mr. Trump. He directed me, as I said in my allocution, and I said as well in the plea – he directed me to make the payments, he directed me to become involved in these matters.”

“I gave loyalty to someone who truthfully does not deserve loyalty,” Cohen added.

Stephanopoulos then asked Cohen if Trump was trying to hide what he was doing.

“Correct,” Cohen responded.

“And he knew it was wrong?” Stephanopoulos asked.

“Of course,” Cohen said.

Stephanopoulos followed up by asking Cohen if Trump was doing this to help his election efforts.

“You have to remember at what point in time that this matter came about: two weeks or so before the election, post-the Billy Bush comments,” Cohen said. “So yes, he was very concerned about how this would affect the election.”

“To help his campaign?” Stephanopoulos asked.

“To help him and the campaign,” Cohen responded.
