Cohen: Trump Never Instructed Me to Lie to Congress

"Mr. Trump did not directly tell me to lie to Congress. That's not how he operates."

President Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen told the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday that Trump never directly instructed Cohen to lie before Congress.

Cohen pleaded guilty to a litany of crimes last year, including lying to Congress, which some have speculated was at the behest of Trump.

On Wednesday, Cohen testified about various investigations related to the 2016 Trump presidential campaign.

“I lied to Congress [about] when Mr. Trump stopped negotiating the Moscow tower project in Russia. I stated that we stopped negotiating in January of 2016, that was false. Our negotiations continued for months later during the campaign,” Cohen said. “Mr. Trump did not directly tell me to lie to Congress. That’s not how he operates.”

“In conversations we had during the campaign, at the same time I was actively negotiating in Russia for him. He would look me in the eye and tell me, “There’s no Russian business,’ and then go on to lie to the American people by saying the same thing,” Cohen said. “In his way, he was telling me to lie.”
