Confirmed: Nearly All Apple Products Vulnerable to Chip Design Flaw

Apple waited until late Thursday to publicly admit that its most popular products are all affected by two vulnerabilities known as Meltdown and Spectre.

The company made the announcement well after competitors Microsoft and Google publicly announced they were affected, prompting critics to admonish Apple for not acting sooner.

The Financial Times has more:

Apple said on Thursday in San Francisco that it had already released mitigations in iOS 11.2 and macOS 10.13.2 to defend against Meltdown and that the Apple watch is not affected by Meltdown. The technology giant said it plans to release mitigations in web browser Safari to [defend] against Spectre.

It’s the latest in a series of recent black eyes for Apple. The company was forced to apologize for intentionally slowing down older phones and offered to sell new batteries for $29.

Intel described the vulnerability as “a method for an attacker to observe contents of privileged memory.” Users could have sensitive data, such as passwords and encryption codes, exposed.
