Congressional Hispanic Caucus Will Not Allow a Hispanic Republican to Join

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) has officially rejected Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo’s (R-FL) request to join the Caucus, claiming that Curbelo and his record are not consistent with the Caucus’s values. However, Curbelo’s record tells a different story.

The CHC, which is made up entirely of Democrats, released the following statement about their decision to reject Curbelo:

According to the CHC website, their mission is to advocate “for issues important to Hispanics through the Congressional legislative process.”

Curbelo seems to have just done that.

For instance in March of 2016, Curbelo was one of four Republicans that “opposed a measure authorizing House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., to file a U.S. Supreme Court brief supporting the state of Texas’ lawsuit over Obama’s executive order protecting the children of immigrants in the U.S. illegally from deportation.”

Now, take into account that Curbelo represents Florida’s 26th congressional district, which is a Latino-heavy district in Miami and one that is a top target for Democrats in 2018, and it seems that this decision might be more about Curbelo’s party affiliation than his values.
