Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Richard Cordray has been accused of using the CFPB to elevate his political profile before running for governor in Ohio. It now appears Cordray is taking another step toward a run.

Cordray announced that he will be resigning from the agency by the end of November, in an email to the bureau’s staff on Wednesday.

“It has been a joy of my life to have the opportunity to serve our country as the first director of the Consumer Bureau by working alongside all of you here,” Cordray wrote. “Together we have made a real and lasting difference that has improved people’s lives.”

House Financial Services Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling blasted Cordray in August for refusing to answer fairly simple questions about whether he will run for Ohio governor.

“I am disappointed by Director Cordray’s steadfast refusal to be transparent with the public about his intentions. If he intends to serve his full term, there is no reason not to say so,” said Hensarling in a statement to Reuters. “The only reasonable conclusion is that he, therefore, harbors partisan political ambitions, which calls into question the propriety of all of his recent and future actions as CFPB Director.”

In a recent interview with CNBC, Cordray dodged when asked whether he would complete his term as CFPB Director.

The U.S. Office of Special Counsel is currently investing Cordray for potentially violating the Hatch Act.

It now seems that Cordray had few intentions of filling out his term as CFPB director.
