Could Betomania Be Waning?

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) struggled to fill a modestly sized auditorium in Iowa City for a campaign event on Sunday, possibly a sign that ‘Betomania’ might be on the decline.

The Washington Examiner published a couple of photos from O’Rourke’s Iowa City visit, which showed the 46-year-old presidential hopeful speaking to a half-full auditorium.

According to the Washington Examiner:

“Though O’Rourke, 46 and a former Texas congressman, started 30 minutes late, the University of Iowa student union ballroom remained less than half filled as the candidate gave his pitch to a mix of students, families, and retirees before taking questions.”

Several people who spoke with the Examiner said that the “crowd was smaller than they anticipated, particularly in a city of 75,000 with a major university.”

One of the reasons for the smaller-than-anticipated crowd could be because the O’Rourke campaign struggled “getting out information about the event, which was awkwardly timed on a Sunday afternoon when students are attending religious services, participating in extracurricular activities, or nursing a hangover.”

Despite O’Rourke’s impressive fundraising numbers, the failed Texas Senate candidate has struggled to breakthrough in the polls. Most show O’Rourke somewhere in the middle of the crowded Democratic field.
