Republicans might have added New Jersey as a possible Senate seat they could pick up in the 2018 midterms elections following Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) poor showing in the Democratic primary on Tuesday night.

Menendez who is seeking a third term following a six-week corruption trial last year received just 62 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary.

Politico called the turnout for Menendez “an unimpressive showing” given that Menendez’s primary opponent had a “lower name ID than your average high schooler.”

MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki said that these results “could be a sign of struggles to come for the NJ Democrat still dogged by bribery charges.”

A recent poll found that 28 percent of registered voters in New Jersey support Menendez while 24 percent support Bob Hugin, Menendez’s Republican challenger.
