Could This Actor Be the Next James Bond?

Daniel Craig’s comments following the release of the most recent James Bond film, “Spectre,” sparked speculation that the 50-year-old actor could be finished with the series. The actor will return for the 25th Bond film in 2019, but his remarks seem to have motivated producers to search for their next superspy.

According to a report from The Daily Star, producers are leaning towards casting English actor Idris Elba, of “Avengers,” “The Office,” and “The Wire” fame, for the role.

From the report:

[Director Antoine Fuqua], 52, revealed [producer Barbara Broccoli] feels “it is time” for an ethnic minority actor to star as 007 and she is certain “it will happen eventually”.

He added: “Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

Elba certainly has the resumé for the role, appearing in action films and series throughout his career.

But there could be a major obstacle to his playing the role: the English actor is currently 45. His casting in the next film would make him the oldest actor to ever take on the role. Even if Elba joins production following Bond 25, due for release in 2019, he would be approximately 50 when the next installment came out (assuming the four year gap between “Spectre” and Bond 25).

Age could simply be a limiting factor in the actor’s longevity though (Bond actors have tended to stay in the role for a decade or more), and Elba could still play the role for a couple of films. Timothy Dalton appeared as the title characters in merely two episodes of the Bond series, and George Lazenby only played Bond in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” Roger Moore also played the part well into his late 50s.

Whoever producers choose, though, it appears that Daniel Craig’s decade-and-a-half run as the world’s most famous spy will soon come to a close.
