Cruz Challenger Raises a Whopping $6.7 Million in Q1

Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) reportedly raised $6.7 million in the first three months of 2018, according to the Texas Tribune. The report comes just a day after reports that O’Rourke raised $2.2 million online alone in January and February, according to data disclosed by Act Blue, Democrats’ online fundraising platform.

O’Rourke’s haul is massive for a Senate candidate’s quarterly report. In the final quarter of 2017, O’Rourke raised $2.4 million, which is an impressive haul in its own right for a non-incumbent challenger. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), the man O’Rourke wants to unseat, raised just $1.9 million that same quarter. In fact, O’Rourke has outraised Cruz in three of the past four reporting periods.

As for cash-on-hand, the Texas Tribune has more:

On Tuesday morning, O’Rourke’s team did not volunteer its cash-on-hand figure, but the $6.7 million raised is likely to go a long way toward closing his deficit with Cruz in money to spend. As of mid-February, O’Rourke had $4.9 million in the bank to Cruz’s $6 million.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Cruz, who just kicked off his “Tough as Texas” reelection campaign tour on Monday. Cruz can likely expect questions as “tough as Texas” about his challenger’s impressive fundraising capabilities for the foreseeable future.
