Cruz Maintains Strong Lead Over O’Rourke in Latest Texas Poll

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) maintained his strong lead over Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) in the latest poll of the Texas Senate race released Friday.

According to the University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll, Cruz earns support from 51 percent of likely voters, while O’Rourke gets just 45 percent support.

Despite rampant media attention and wild speculation, O’Rourke has never led in a single public poll, according to RealClearPolitics. Rather, this makes the 18th straight poll showing Cruz in the lead. And while some of the polls in July and August showed the race within the polls’ margins of error, Cruz leads by an average of seven percentage points, according to RCP.

Friday’s poll shows the gains that Cruz’s team has made in framing O’Rourke as too liberal for Texas:

However, Cruz’s attempts to paint O’Rourke as too liberal for Texas appear to be paying dividends. While 49 percent of Republicans said they had no opinion of the congressman in the UT/TT poll in June, only 9 percent say the same in the poll released Friday. And while 42 percent of Republicans from the June poll said they had an unfavorable opinion of O’Rourke, that number has jumped to 83 percent in Friday’s poll.

O’Rourke does hold a lead among Texas’s independent voters, but their numbers are not large enough to convert that into real gains in the overall polling results. Still, O’Rourke’s overall favorability is worse than Cruz’s:

Cruz may also be buoyed by the fact that his net-favorability rating is positive while O’Rourke’s is negative. Likely voters have a favorable view of Cruz by a 51-44 margin, while they have an unfavorable view of O’Rourke by a 49-44 margin.

With less than two weeks to go, this UT/TT poll appears to indicate that Democrats would need some kind of miracle to defeat Cruz in November and notch their first statewide win in nearly 20 years.
