Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) admitted that the Democratic Party has lacked a clear message in recent months, during an interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Former RNC Chair Michael Steele asked Cummings about the recent debacle that was the DNC “Unity Tour” that featured Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and DNC Chair Tom Perez.

The “Unity Tour” was supposed to show the nation that the Democratic Party had healed following its brutal 2016 primary, but instead, the tour highlighted the deep divides that still exist within the party.

Steele asked Cummings how Democrats could get on the same page before the 2018-midterm elections if they can’t even agree on what it means to be a Democrat.

“We as Democrats have, over and over again, spoken and tried to address the issues that confront Americans on a day-to-day basis, but our message has not been clear enough,” Cummings admitted.

“We [have] got to clarify our message, Mike. It’s not that complicated, but we’ve got to do it” Cummings said. “As I’ve said before, the Republicans do an excellent job of it. They stay on message.”
