Chris Wilson, a data expert with WPA Intelligence, defended Facebook from attacks by Apple CEO Tim Cook on Fox News on Thursday, saying that Cook’s company pulled similar stunts in the past.

“Facebook’s kind of like a library that’s being blamed for somebody coming in and stealing a lot of their books,” he said.

Fox played a clip of Cook’s Facebook criticism from an MSNBC town hall. “We could make a ton of money if we monetized our customer, if our customer was our product,” Cook said of Facebook’s practices. “We’re not going to traffic in your personal life. I think it’s an invasion of privacy.”

“Privacy, to us, is a human right. It’s a civil liberty,” he added.

Wilson pushed back on this, pointing out that Apple engaged in many of the same practices.

“Tim Cook’s got a convenient memory. It wasn’t that long ago that Apple was in trouble for tracking users’ locations without their permission or letting people know,” the data expert said. “For Cook to make these sort of charges is a little bit disingenuous.”

The Fox host agreed, saying that Cook “put a halo over his own head” at the town hall.
