DCCC Chair Pulls Out of Lipinski Fundraiser Over Abortion Bills

One week after Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Chair Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL) announced she planned to attend a fundraiser for pro-life Rep. Dan Lipinski, a fellow Illinois Democrat, Bustos announced she’s pulling out of the fundraiser over concerns about abortion.

State legislatures passed a series of laws that limit state funding for abortion in recent weeks, and the outcry from pro-choice Democrats has been deafening.

Bustos released a statement Wednesday explaining her decision, and while it does not specifically cite Lipinski’s pro-life stance as the reason, her statement does address her support for abortion rights:

“I’m proud to have a 100% pro-choice voting record and I’m deeply alarmed by the rapidly escalating attack on women’s access to reproductive care in several states,” she said. “While Congressman Lipinski and I do not agree on women’s reproductive health care, this does not change how I will work as DCCC chair to protect our big tent Democratic caucus.”

Bustos’ decision to attend the Lipinski fundraiser in the first place roiled Democrats, who have sought to unseat him for years. Lipinski narrowly defeated Marie Newman in a primary last cycle, and Newman has already announced she intends to challenge Lipinski again in 2020.

But a DCCC policy that blackballs vendors that work for challengers to Democratic candidates is hurting Newman’s effort. Several far-left liberals like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ro Khanna (D-CA), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Mark Pocan (D-WI) have all spoken out against the policy and held discussions with Bustos behind closed doors.

Ocasio-Cortez went so far as to tell her supporters to stop donating to the DCCC until the policy is changed.

Democrats in leadership responded to these liberals by saying they “don’t have time for these games,” arguing instead that the DCCC should be focused on protecting incumbents.
