De Blasio Accused of Bribery

A donor to New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s campaign testified under oath that the mayor “encouraged” bribery in the form of campaign donations, according to The New York Times.

Harendra Singh, a restaurant owner from Long Island, said “that he steered tens of thousands of dollars to Mayor Bill de Blasio’s political campaigns in return for favorable treatment.”

The mayor won re-election last November in a landslide, and he has been mentioned as a possible national candidate in the Democratic Party’s future.

But a corruption charge could derail his hopes. Per the Times.

Mr. Singh said that he and the mayor often discussed the lease and the donations in the same conversations.

And on two occasions, the restaurateur testified, Mr. de Blasio requested contributions for himself or political allies and, when told that Mr. Singh had already met the limit, said: “Listen, I don’t want to know. Just do what you have to do.”

Mr. Singh has already pleaded guilty to bribing Mr. de Blasio, although the mayor, who has vehemently denied wrongdoing, was not charged with any crimes — in part, prosecutors have said, because he only received campaign donations from Mr. Singh, not personal gifts.

Mayor de Blasio, a strong Hillary Clinton supporter for decades, seems to have taken a page out his former mentor’s book, exchanging cash for favors.
