New York City mayor and Democratic presidential candidate, Bill de Blasio, blamed his staff for missing a 9/11 memorial ceremony for first responders who died from toxic exposure on Friday claiming that they did not make him aware of the event.

“The Mayor’s team believed they could not make the event work with his schedule and declined without conferring with him,” a spokesman for de Blasio said in a statement. “Had [he] known about the invitation, he would have attended.”

The New York Post pointed out that on the day of the ceremony, de Blasio was able to “make it to his usual coffee shop in Brooklyn,” and that his security detail was spotted “at his favorite gym, the Park Slope Y, until about 10 a.m. — just before the ceremony.”

“A spokeswoman said he was attending an ‘internal meeting’ at Gracie Mansion afterward,” the New York Post reported.

“[de Blasio] should have been here and it’s unacceptable that they’re not,” Maureen Fritz told the New York Post. “They ought to be ashamed of themselves . . . They should not be re-elected at all because that’s not how you treat your citizens, your first responders.”

Fritz was in attendance at the event in honor of her brother, firefighter William Gormley.

Former Mayor Mike Bloomberg and former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart, as well as several local Congress members, were able to attend the event. A spokesperson for the event did confirm that de Blasio had been invited.
