At a press conference on Tuesday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio compared President Trump to Soviet leader Joseph Stalin for his half-joking comment that Democrats were “treasonous” for not applauding during the State of the Union.

Asked about Trump’s remark, de Blasio immediately went to the Stalin comparison.

“When Stalin gave speeches, the different commissars used to look to see if people were applauding long enough and hard enough,” he said. “This is ludicrous that a president of the United States would say out loud that someone who did not applaud for him at the State of the Union was committing an act of treason.”

The mayor explained that partisan applause at the State of the Union is a common facet of the event.

“I don’t know why this guy says things like this,” de Blasio said, referring to the president. “It just alienates a huge swath of the American people who do not see that as anything like an act of treason.”

Stalin, during his reign as the premier of the Soviet Union, murdered millions of his own citizens and weaponized famine to subjugate Ukraine.
