De Blasio for President? NYTimes Says ‘Sure Looks Like It’

Evidence is piling up that New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio will join the Democratic presidential primary field, according to a triple-bylined story in the New York Times published Friday.

The reporters point to staff hires and early primary state travel, among other things, as clear signs that de Blasio is at least considering a bid:

He has traveled to three early presidential primary states, held $5,000-a-plate events for donors and hired a small-dollar fund-raising consultant.

He spoke at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-Israel lobbying group, and is now on another trip to raise money in Boston, after which he will meet with Democratic activists in Las Vegas.

These are the concrete steps of a man preparing to run for president.

When asked about his presidential ambitions, de Blasio says he is “not ruling anything out” and says he’ll make a decision “sooner than later.”

A whopping 76 percent of New York City voters said de Blasio should not run for president, with 47 percent saying it would be bad for the city.

De Blasio would need to catch up to the other candidates in fundraising, but he already hit the 1-percent threshold in two polls released last month to appear on the primary debate stage. The first debate is scheduled for late June in Miami.
